Towns & Villages


The Old Church Hall is on the edge of Romney Marsh in a village which boasts only a church by way of tourist attractions but the historic towns of Tenterden and Hythe and modern Ashford are within 10 miles. Rye and seaside Folkestone are about 15 miles away and Canterbury and Dover are within 25 miles.

The Rare Breeds Centre

Just a ten-minute drive from The Old Church Hall is The Rare Breeds Centre in Woodchurch. The centre is great fun for families and animal lovers with rare breeds of British farm animals, the chance to meet the animals in the barn, see falconry displays and enjoy tractor rides and pig racing in the summer.

Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway

The closest place to step aboard the miniature steam and diesel trains of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is at the Dymchurch station, eight miles away. Dymchurch offers seaside fun and you can ride the rails to historic Hythe or to the end of the line at Dungeness. A great way to see the countryside of the Romney Marsh.

Kent & East Sussex Railway


Heritage railway, the Kent and East Sussex Railway has a station at Tenterden (10 miles away) where you can step aboard their vintage trains. The tracks run through the beautiful countryside of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to Bodiam, where you can disembark and visit the National Trust castle.

Chapel Down Vineyard

The 22-acre Chapel Down vineyard and winery is 12 miles from The Old Church Hall, near Tenterden. Visitors can walk through the vineyard, visit the shop or dine at the vineyard's restaurant, The Swan. Guided tours of the vineyard and winery are also available but pre-booking is essential.

A Private Chef


For a special occasion dinner at The Old Church Hall, how about letting someone else do the cooking? Kent-based private chef Silvestre Inácio is able to come to the property and cater a dinner party for up to 25 people. Gusbourne Vineyard

The Gusbourne winery and tasting room, The Nest, are the closest of a number of vineyards in the area, just five miles away (and next door to The Old Church Hall’s sister property, Horne’s Place Oast). A two-hour tour and tasting is available 10am-5pm, Wednesday to Sunday but should be booked in advance

Port Lympne Reserve

There are more exotic animals at the nearby Port Lympne Wild Animal Reserve, 6.5 miles away and part of the Aspinall Foundation’s conservation programme. A safari experience gives you the chance to ride on an open-sided safari vehicle through an area of grassland where plains animals, including zebra and giraffe, wander freely. It also has a Dinosaur Forest with life-sized dinosaur models.

Dymchurch and other nearby beaches

The closest beach is at Dymchurch where there are vast expanses of sand when the tide is out. In the summer the beach can be busy thanks to the holiday parks which are located around the village but there are quieter spots at Greatstone or Hythe (pictured) and Sandgate – where the beach is shingle.

The National Trust-protected Bodiam Castle (pictured - courtesy of National Trust and Gesine Garz) is a 40-minute drive (about 19 miles) from The Old Church Hall. It ’s a 14th century, moated castle with tea rooms.. It takes about the same time to reach the magnificent, English Heritage-managed, Dover Castle which is about 23 miles in the opposite direction.

Curious Brewery

The Curious Brewery is the beer producing arm of Chapel Down. Their modern brewery in Ashford is eight miles from The Old Church Hall. The site welcomes visitors on brewery tours and tastings and also has an on-site bar and restaurant.

Local Walks


There are some lovely walks right outside the front door - starting with the short stroll through the churchyard opposite and down to the Royal Military Canal. Once you reach the canal, you can turn left to walk about a mile to Bilsington and The White Horse pub.
